Anniversary Celebrations

We have spent a great deal of this academic year celebrating the 95th anniversary of our school a range of events.

The original school was opened by Councillor Peter Lee JP on Saturday 22nd March 1930. The school was named The A.J Dawson Secondary School after the Director of Education who was well known in the area as he often visited schools.

In subsequent years and reflecting changes to educational policy the school has been known as A.J Dawson Grammar School, Wellfield A. J Dawson Grammar School, Wellfield Comprehensive School, Wellfield Community School and now simply Wellfield School.

Wellfield Comprehensive School started as an amalgamation of three schools, Wellfield Grammar School (previously AJ Dawson), Wingate Secondary Modern School and Wheatley Hill Secondary Modern School. Then Yohden Hall School closed in the 1980’s and pupils and staff from this school also joined Wellfield.

Wellfield has been judged as a “good” school by Ofsted in 2014 and 2018.

We invite all past students to share in this occasion. Your memories and contributions are welcome as we commemorate our shared legacy. Let's honour our past, celebrate our present, and inspire the future.

Wellfield 95th Anniversary Service at Durham Cathedral

Wellfield School marked its 95th anniversary in grand style with a special commemorative service at Durham Cathedral, bringing together students, staff, and esteemed guests for a momentous occasion. The event, held in the inspiring setting of the cathedral, reflected on the schools rich history and its continued commitment to education and community.

The service featured readings from key figures, each offering a unique perspective on the schools journey and aspirations for the future. The Reverend Canon Michael Hampel, Vice Dean and Precentor opened the ceremony with a welcome prayer. CEO of New College Durham Academies Trust, Linda Rodham spoke about the rich history of the school and its impact on the generations of students. Headteacher, Louise Colquhoun, addressed the congregation sharing heartfelt words about the schools achievements, and the vision for the years ahead.

A special address was also given by Lord Wilson of Sedgefield, who reflected on the significance of education and the schools contribution to the local community over the past 95 years.

Music played a central role in the service, with powerful performances from both students and staff. A staff choir, composed of dedicated staff throughout New College Durham Academies Trust, delivered a moving performance of 'Gresford' showcasing the unity and spirit of school community.

Adding to the atmosphere, a student choir featuring voices from all secondary schools within NCDAT filled the cathedral with harmonious melodies, symbolizing the strength and collaboration across the trust.

The 95th anniversary service was not only a celebration  of the past but also a look towards the future. As the school continues to grow and evolve, its core values to go the extra mile will continue.

As the service concluded, attendees left with a renewed sense of pride and anticipation for the schools upcoming centenary, knowing that its legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

 95th Anniversary Exhibition

In celebration of 95 years of academic excellence and community impact, Wellfield School invited alumni, parents and their local community to a special exhibition that highlights the institution’s rich history and achievements.

This event took place on Saturday 22nd March at Wellfield School, and showcased a curated collection of photographs, events and memories that trace through the school’s journey of nearly a century. Attendees had the opportunity to reconnect with former classmates and teachers while exploring the evolution of the school and lasting contributions to the community.

‘This celebration is not just a tribute to our past, but a celebration of the people who have shaped our school over the decades,’ said Linda Rodham, CEO of New College Durham Academies Trust. ‘We were thrilled to welcome alumni, families and supporters to share in this milestone moment.’

With nearly a century of learning, innovation and community engagement, Wellfield School continues to uphold its legacy while looking ahead to the future. Organisers hoped the event served as an opportunity to celebrate past achievements and inspire the next generation of students.
