Some good news has been announced for community sport in East Durham. Wellfield School have been awarded a grant from the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund, to install an all-weather, artificial grass football pitch.
The grant will enable Wellfield School to provide state of the art sports facilities for students during the school day and the community of East Durham during evening and weekends.
The new facility will comprise of a full size FA standard, floodlit, third generation (3G) artificial grass pitch (AGP). Changing rooms and toilet facilities will also be modified to meet the needs of the new pitch for its stakeholders.
This will replace a grass pitch prone to waterlogging, that has an uneven surface and provide suitable changing rooms and toilet facilities that are not currently fit for purpose.
Wellfield School worked with the Football Foundation and the Durham County FA to secure a £500,000 grant from the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund towards the project.
Jonathan Coates, Business Manager at Wellfield School, said: “Wellfield School is in desperate need of improved sports facilities. The school has been growing in recent years, and the outdoor area is not suitable to handle the demand that is needed. With only grass pitches, students aren’t able to use them in inclement weather.
“By securing the grant from the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund, this will provide students at Wellfield with a state-of the-art facility that can be accessed for the curriculum, all year round. There isn’t a facility like this nearby and it will provide a space for the community and local partnership football clubs to develop grass roots football, whilst also helping us generate funds for future projects and giving a home to our school’s sports teams.”
Linda Rodham, Head Teacher at Wellfield School, said: “We are delighted with the grant award because of the difference it will make for pupils at the school and also the local community.”
Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “Since 2000, the Football Foundation has awarded 290 grants worth £17.1m across Durham towards grassroots sports projects worth £50m and it is great to hear that Wellfield School will be the latest beneficiary.
“Funding from the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund, delivered by the Foundation, will support the club in developing a brand new 3G football pitch for the local community. Made possible by investment from the Premier League, The FA and the Government, via Sport England, the Fund is supporting the grassroots game by improving access to high-quality football facilities across the country.”
