A great set of exam results have topped off what has been another excellent year for Wellfield School.
We are very proud of the GCSE results achieved by our students in 2019. They have worked incredibly hard and once again Wellfield continues to be a high attaining school with results across the curriculum above national standards.
78% of our students achieved a pass in both English and a Maths. This was well above the national average and the top result in all Durham secondary schools. The English results were very impressive with 82% of the students gaining Grade 4 or higher and 60% achieving Grade 5 or higher. The Maths results were equally impressive with 83% of the students gaining Grade 4 or higher and 57% achieving Grade 5 or higher. Once again, our maths department is one of the top performing maths departments in the county with a progress score of +0.36. Attainment in Maths at Wellfield is outstanding.
It is not just in English and Maths where students have excelled. There have been some outstanding performances across the curriculum and our overall Progress 8 score once again is one of the best in County Durham and above the national average. The average Attainment 8 (which measures a students’ average grade across eight subjects) was 48.7. This is also substantially above the County Durham average and above the national average. This is a testament to everyone’s hard work and dedication. Science is particularly strong at Wellfield with 73% of students achieving two Science passes at Grade 9-4. This is well above the Durham and national average. High levels of attainment in subjects across the curriculum are the result of high-quality teaching and a commitment from students to achieve.
Top performing student Harry Burrell achieved 10 grades at 9-7. Four of these grades were the very top grade 9. Harry was only one of many high performing students as 16% of all students achieved at least one grade 9.
Headteacher Linda Rodham remarked, “It is wonderful to see so many happy students and parents in school collecting their results. It is so pleasing to share in their success. Every year we encourage all students to work hard and achieve their full potential. Once again, our students have delivered some outstanding results. The governors and I would like to extend our congratulations to our students and sincerely thank our talented staff for their hard work and commitment. Well done everyone”.
